My colleague and I walked into a hospital room to see a man who was recovering from a recent medical procedure. He was slumped over in his wheelchair and could not hide his pain. It was obvious to both of us that this man was suffering terribly. We greeted him and I said, “How ya’ doing?” His response was muffled and it sounded like he said, “I’m a mess.” My colleague said, “You’re not a mess!” The suffering man in the wheelchair held his head up high and said to us loud and clear, “I am blessed.” I smiled and said, “Yes! You are blessed! Thank you for letting us come visit you today.”

Later that day as I was driving around Denver, I saw at least 35-40 homeless people – in all parts of town. One man only had one leg, the other was cut off at the knee. His pillowless head was on the filthy, littered and stained pavement as he tried to sleep with the sun blazing down on him. It was 4:00 p.m.

Another homeless person, roughly a block away, was putting mascara on as her homeless partner walked up and down a median looking angry as she showed Denver drivers her cardboard sign. I am not a doctor, but it appeared that she desperately needed some medication along with so much more. Tears filled my eyes as I said a prayer and continued driving down Speer Blvd.

I am blessed beyond measure with a beautiful home and people all around me who love me in spite of my many faults. The people I saw yesterday who were in so much pain made me even more grateful for how God continues to bless me. I ended my work day by visiting another person who was in a rehabilitation center. The gentleman had Alzheimer’s disease and his loving wife had a cot next to his bed.

Her face lit up when I walked in as we discussed her husband’s condition. As she held his hand, I asked if I could give her a hug. She said, “Of course! That would be so nice!” We talked about the brutality of Alzheimer’s disease, and how wonderful it will be when this condition is wiped off the face of the earth for good. I hugged her and held her hand before I left. “She said, God Bless You Jeff.” I thanked her and left feeling even more grateful.

Doing my small part to help relieve someone’s pain makes me want to shout, “I am blessed!” Earlier today, I shared Reiki with my wife who is dealing with a stubborn wisdom tooth that is the source of unbearable pain. She just texted me and thanked me for the Reiki and said, “It really helped calm down the pain.”

I am so grateful for the gift of Reiki and for the many souls I am able to help every day of my life. If you or a loved one are in any kind of pain, please consider Reiki. You’ll be glad you did.
