Seems like I’ve always loved our seniors. When I was a little kid my hero was my Grandpa, a senior who knew how to make kids happy. He was a generous, gift giving man who always gave it away – always. The last time I spoke with my grandpa was when he was in the hospital preparing for surgery the next day.

My grandpa was lying in a hospital bed and giving me lottery tickets to give to other family members and friends. Before handing me a ticket he would tell me why it had to go to the Snyders, our next door neighbors, for example. I was in my early teens and uneasy about his upcoming heart surgery the next day. In the meantime, Grandpa was handing me lottery tickets to give to others. He was such an amazing man and I take great pride in knowing that his blood is running through me.

It was a “Big Deal!” as he would say, because lottery tickets had just come out in Illinois and my grandpa was always buying them and then giving them away to other people. My Grandpa Kelly was the first senior I loved. He didn’t make it through the heart surgery and died at 72 years old. Sounds so young to me now. The earth stopped moving on that day. It had to, so I could catch my breath.

A lot of times seniors – just like anyone else, need things to slow down long enough so they can take a deep breath. Maybe a senior just lost a loved one or some other traumatic event has sideswiped them and turned their world upside down. Reiki makes it easier for us to stop and take a breath. It always makes things better. I’ve helped countless seniors by sharing Reiki with them.

The healing energy slows our wheels down enough so that we can take a breath and focus on one thing – the moment at hand. Distractions go away as Reiki sends low lying energies on their way and replaces them with a higher vibration, that we feel physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It’s one of those experiences that everyone should try.

You’re never too old to try Reiki. I once shared Reiki with a 101 year old woman. It is definitely one of my favorite Reiki memories. The first thing she said to her daughter after she was lying on the table was, “Look! He’s already messing up my hair!” True story.

Later, she told both of us how much better her back felt after the Reiki session and how “everything feels better.” Again, true story. If you or a loved one know of any seniors in pain, have them consider Reiki. Consider it for yourself too. Reiki is not interested in age; just delivering a gift that takes us to a higher level in mind, body and spirit.
